Music of the Americas

This time we have prepared an interesting programme of piano music – romantic works by American and South American composers. Though I said “romantic”, the music of these composers encompasses wide and varied emotions, from exotic dances to enchanting melodies. Main highlights include works of Hector Villa-Lobos and George Antheil (aka Bad Boy of Music), among others.

Date: December 12
Time: 8:00pm
Venue: Recital Hall at Hong Kong City Hall
Tickets: $120/$60

PerformNow will be sponsoring three pianists: Lawrenza Lau (who had previous performed in Music of Spain), Sandy Ho and Morton Wan. Led by our two pianist-founders, this promises to be one of the most interesting programmes we have put together!

About the concert video

Dear parents and friends,

Once again, thank you for participating in my last student concert Colour in Monotone. At the concert, we received help from parents and their relatives to record the concert and produce a DVD. The DVD is about one and half hour long and is recorded in PAL format which is viewable by any typical DVD player. The DVD contains a complete musical performance by all participants. This DVD is available for order for $100. All proceeds will contribute to cover the expenses incurred in the making of the concert. Please let me know if any of you are interested or have any questions.

Thank you.
Sandy

Romantic Russians - Piano Music of Bortkiewicz and Catoire

Concert Recommendation

Sergei Bortkiewicz and Georgy Catoire were two towering figures in Rachmaninoff's circle who have left us some extraordinarily beautiful works. Their music is now largely forgotten due to their timidity and failure to promote themselves at that time. Few recordings exist, and their scores are hardly published nowadays.

Bortkiewicz's piano writing reflects strongly the Chopin-Liszt tradition, while Catoire wrote with an heavy French accent. These precious works are, for the first time, brought to audiences in Hong Kong.

Time: 8:00pm
Venue: Recital Hall,
8/f at
City Hall High Block,

An Evening of French Music

French music is more than just Debussy and Ravel. Unbeknownst to most, there were dozens of composers, contemporary to Debussy and Ravel, who contributed to the immense richness of the French musical tradition – particularly piano music. From pioneers such as Fauré to neo-classicists such as Poulenc, the musical landscape is fertile and varied, blessed with composers such as Satie, Sèverac, Ibert, and Milhaud. The concert will sample music from all six of these composers.

As per requests from our audiences, Debussy’s Clair de lune (from the movie Frankie and Johnny) and Satie’s Gnossienne No. 1 (from the movie The Painted Veil) will also be in the programme.

Date: April 26, 2009
Time: 8:00pm
Venue: Recital Hall,
8/f at
City Hall High Block,
Central

Admissions: $80/$40

Tickets go on sale on March 26

Deal all friend,

IF you have interest to attend , just call me and we can go together!

See you all!

'Kissin's technique…is as awesome as ever.' – The Times
Evgeny Kissin was born in Moscow in October 1971 and began to play by ear and improvise on the piano at the age of two. At six years old, he entered a special school for gifted children, the Moscow Gnessin School of Music, where he was a student of Anna Pavlovna Kantor, who has remained his only teacher. At the age of ten, he made his concerto debut playing Mozart’s Piano Concerto K. 466 and gave his first solo recital in Moscow one year later. He came to international attention in March 1984 when, at the age of twelve, he performed Chopin’s Piano Concertos 1 and 2 in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory with the Moscow State Philharmonic under Dmitri Kitaenko. This concert was recorded live by Melodia, and a two-LP album was released the following year. During the next two years, several Kissin performances in Moscow were recorded live and five more LPs were released by Melodia.
